Welcome to getting started with SMS by email. Once you have signed up a UTBox account you are ready to begin! Please see the video below and/or read the steps to take. There is also a screen-shot at the end to show you how your email to SMS might look like.
Step 1 - Compose a new email
Using your favourite email client start a new email. Some clients will call this "New Mail Message" or similar.
You are allowed to use the email account of the address which is specified in your UTBox Member Centre Preferences. By default the email address you signed up with is used.
Step 2 - Address it to 'number'@sms.utbox.net
Simply replace 'number' with the phone number you're sending the SMS to, (e.g. 61491570156@sms.utbox.net or 0491570156@sms.utbox.net). You are allowed to have multiple recipients.
Step 3 - Write your message
By default the system uses the email body content to generate the SMS message. If you prefer to use the email subject instead you will need to change your Preferences by clicking Preferences > [your fax number] and selecting the appropriate option on that page.
Please also note:
- 1 SMS is counted as 160 characters or less (in English).
- You can send more than 160 characters but you will be charged accordingly as 1 SMS for each 160 characters spanned up to a total of 1440 characters (9 SMS).
Step 4 - Send and receive notification
When you are happy with the contents send the email by clicking "Send" or similar.
Our servers will attempt to deliver the SMS to the carrier with which the handset is provisioned. You should receive a successful notification moments later as we get confirmation that our upstream provider(s) have delivered the message to the responsible carrier.
If you are experiencing difficulties please refer to the SMS troubleshooting article.
